SSC Junior Hindi Translator (JHT) Examination — Eligibility, Syllabus & Exam Pattern
The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) conducts an open competitive examination for recruitment to the posts of Junior Hindi Translator, Junior Translator, and Senior Hindi Translator for various ministries, departments, and organizations of the Government of India. This is a specialized exam for candidates with a strong command of both Hindi and English. The selection process consists of two stages: a computer-based objective test (Paper-I) and a conventional descriptive test (Paper-II) focusing on translation and writing skills.
📌 Eligibility Criteria
Nationality
A candidate must be a citizen of India, or a subject of Nepal/Bhutan, or a Tibetan refugee who came to India before January 1, 1962, to permanently settle here.
Age Limit
A candidate must be between 18 and 30 years old. Age relaxation is available for reserved categories (OBC, SC/ST, PwBD) as per government rules.
Educational Qualification
Candidates must have one of the following Master's degree combinations:
- Master's degree in Hindi with English as a compulsory or elective subject at the degree level; OR
- Master's degree in English with Hindi as a compulsory or elective subject at the degree level; OR
- Master's degree in any subject other than Hindi or English, with Hindi medium and English as a compulsory or elective subject at the degree level; OR
- Master's degree in any subject other than Hindi or English, with English medium and Hindi as a compulsory or elective subject at the degree level.
AND
A recognized Diploma or Certificate course in translation from Hindi to English & vice versa OR two years’ experience of translation work from Hindi to English and vice versa in a Central or State Government Office.

Paper-I (Computer-Based Examination)
This is an objective-type test that assesses the candidate's language and literature proficiency.

Syllabus for Paper-I
- General Hindi: Tests understanding of Hindi language, literature, correct use of words, grammar (sandhi, samas, etc.), idioms, proverbs, synonyms, and antonyms. Questions are of a degree level.
- General English: Tests understanding of English language, literature, correct use of words, grammar (tenses, articles, prepositions, etc.), idioms, phrases, synonyms, and antonyms. Questions are of a degree level.
Paper-II (Descriptive)
Candidates who qualify Paper-I are eligible to appear for Paper-II.

- Content:
- Translation: Two passages for translation—one from Hindi to English and one from English to Hindi.
- Essay: Two essays—one in Hindi and one in English.
- Maximum Marks: 200
- Duration: 2 Hours
This paper is designed to test the candidate's translation skills and their ability to write and express thoughts clearly in both languages.
