SSC Multi-Tasking Staff (MTS) Examination — Eligibility, Syllabus & Exam Pattern

The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) conducts the Multi-Tasking (Non-Technical) Staff (MTS) Examination to recruit candidates for various Group 'C' non-gazetted, non-ministerial posts in different ministries and departments of the Government of India. This exam is a significant opportunity for candidates with a 10th-grade education. The selection process primarily involves a Computer-Based Examination. For the post of Havaldar in CBIC/CBN, a Physical Efficiency Test (PET)/Physical Standard Test (PST) is also required.

📌 Eligibility Criteria

Nationality

A candidate must be a citizen of India, or a subject of Nepal/Bhutan, or a Tibetan refugee who came to India before January 1, 1962, to permanently settle here.

Age Limit

There are two age groups for different posts within the MTS recruitment:

  • 18-25 years: For most MTS posts and Havaldar in CBN (Central Bureau of Narcotics).
  • 18-27 years: For a few MTS posts and Havaldar in CBIC (Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs).

Age relaxation is available for reserved categories (OBC, SC/ST, PwBD) as per government rules.

Educational Qualification

A candidate must have passed the Matriculation (10th Class) examination or an equivalent from a recognized Board.

Computer-Based Examination

The computer-based test is divided into two mandatory sessions conducted on the same day.

  • Session-I is qualifying in nature. There is no negative marking in this session.
  • Session-II determines the final merit. There is negative marking (1 mark for each wrong answer) in this session.
Syllabus for Computer-Based Exam
  • Numerical and Mathematical Ability: Basic arithmetic from the 10th standard level, including integers, whole numbers, LCM, HCF, decimals, fractions, percentages, ratio, profit and loss, time, distance, and work.
  • Reasoning Ability and Problem-Solving: Includes questions on similarities and differences, problem-solving, analysis, judgment, decision making, and verbal/non-verbal reasoning.
  • General Awareness: Tests knowledge of current events, history, geography, art and culture, civics, economics, and general science.
  • English Language and Comprehension: Focuses on basic English vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, synonyms, antonyms, and reading comprehension.

Physical Efficiency Test (PET) / Physical Standard Test (PST)

This is only for the post of Havaldar and is qualifying in nature.

  • Physical Efficiency Test (PET):
    • Walking: 1600 meters in 15 minutes for males; 1 km in 20 minutes for females.
  • Physical Standard Test (PST):
    • Height: Male - 157.5 cm; Female - 152 cm. (Relaxable for certain categories)
    • Chest (Male only): Minimum 81 cm (with a minimum expansion of 5 cm).

👉 Note

  • The final merit list for MTS is prepared based on performance in Session-II of the Computer-Based Examination.
  • For the post of Havaldar, candidates must also qualify the PET/PST.
